About the Speaker


Dr. Alexander Evans, Ph.D., O.B.E. is a Professor in Practice in Public Policy at the London School of Economics. A British career diplomat, he has worked as an advisor to the Prime Minister in 10 Downing Street, Strategy Director in the Cabinet Office, and Director Cyber – Britain’s chief international technology negotiator – in the Foreign Office. He has served as Deputy and Acting High Commissioner (=Ambassador) to India and (briefly) Pakistan, led the United Nations Security Council expert group on Daesh, Al Qaida and the Taliban, and was a senior advisor in the U.S. Department of State during the first Obama Administration working for the late Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. 


He has held a range of academic positions including as the Henry Kissinger Chair at the Library of Congress, a Senior Fellow at Yale, and a Gwilym Gibbon Fellow at Nuffield College Oxford. He was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) by the late Queen Elizabeth II and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He has published widely, including in Foreign Affairs and The Economist.

About the Moderator


Jack Segal is a former senior U.S. and NATO diplomat and former IAF co-chair. In the Clinton administration, Segal served as the National Security Council director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, and later, as Director for Non-proliferation. He served 10 years as senior political advisor to the NATO operational Commander where he helped implement Afghanistan policy. As a Foreign Service Officer overseas, he served in Russia, Israel, Greece and Botswana. He is a Vietnam veteran. He is an instructor at NMC Extended Education on a variety of global affairs topics.
